Planning a new website: a simple checklist

The best website projects start with a clear plan. Working through these questions before you begin will save time, keep costs down and lead to a better site.

1. What should the website do?

Bring in enquiries? Take bookings? Sell products? Pick the one or two most important jobs, and design everything around them.

2. Which pages do you need?

Most small businesses need a home page, an about page, a page for each main service, and a contact page. Start small: you can always add more.

3. Words and photos

Gather what you have: your services, prices, frequently asked questions, and the best photos of your work. Real photos of you and your business always beat stock images.

4. Your domain and email

Make sure you know who manages your website address and email, and have the login details handy.

5. Who will update it?

If you'll be making changes yourself, ask for a site you can edit easily, and some training to go with it.
